This week we continued to finalizing our Dorothea Lang writing pieces. We also continued to do more dark room stuff making papers ready to process photos onto. We also went on our first class felid trip and were assigned to take photos of people there and check out the photography museum since it was free that day. We then had to process them in photo shop it make them black and white and also invert them so they can transfer onto our papers we are making. We also had to write a 1,000 word peace about the different elements of our photo. ChemistryI made the man's skin a little softer with the yellow when you first put it into black and white then I cropped the image so he would match up with the tow left points in the rule of thirds. I also messed around with the curves trying to make the wrinkles in his shirt stand out more make his clothes darker. Finally I messed around with brightness and contrast for a little bit and then I inverted it so it can then be processed on paper. Humanity'sEmotion This photo is shedding light on the sadness that is happening at the time. How people are just sad that they have to leave their homes and work in the fields for little money. Kids at the time also felt probably felt very lonely, with their parents working on the farm and them having to stay home or even them working on the farms which can also be lonely. Most of the time as well the oldest of the kids were left to take care of there siblings when their parents worked. She just seems tired of being in this situation of consent struggle. Moving around when the season changes and maybe in her old life she had friends and now she can never see them again. You can see sadness in the poster she has of looking into the empty firepit and her body language is in a very tired and sad posture. Even the room she's sitting in adds sadness to the photo and almost as if the room is tired too. Light It’s great example of harsh lighting. On top of that the way the harsh light hits at a strong angle instead of straight up and down makes this photo that more striking. Also the fact that she is on the darker side of the lighting makes it that much more dramatic and makes the emotion stand out. Also since back then they didn’t have the nice lighting we have today it’s a great examples of how she uses natural light and the one flash of her camera to create these beautiful portraits. Most photographers at the time I feel didn't have the right touch with light like Dorothea Lange. She even had the big cameras instead of the smaller ones. So that just adds another layer of technique and authenticity to her photos and especially this one. From the angle of the light it looks like it's around morning. The light also shades the difference cracks and ripples the room has. History Taos Junction to Bosque Farms project of 1935 which was located in Albuquerque which now is a high end city but there are still farms here and there with farm animals and land. The Federal Government in 1935 initiated the Taos Junction to Bosque Farms project after more fields around the country fell victim to the dust bowls ,a lot of farmers became dust bowl refugees and were relocated to do farm work. Most families all over the United States had to move around due to finding better work constantly when the crops would stop growing. Most families only had each other and a car. Bosque Farms was in the Valencia Country and was far enough away from things that they were not effected till 1937 when the dust finally caught up to them. The homes were built when the refuges were first moving to this crop. But most nowadays are destroyed or are empty. Subject The subject in the photo conveys so much sadness and loneliness. Because as a kid she probably doesn't really know what is happening and why she had to leave her home. She just seems really confused on what is happening in her life. Confused on why she had to leave home and come live unideal conditions and now has to work for long hours for little pay. You can tell by the her posture, her back hunched over and looking down at the dusty floor and her head pushing against her hand as her forearm rest on her knee that hovers over the floor. Even her face radiates with being tired. She just represents the similar emotions that were shared throughout the other refuges. Feelings of being lost, confused, sad and tired. Feelings of no one cares and that everything they are doing is hopeless. She represents the loneliness of the great depression. Socail Dorothea Lange was one of the most influential photographers during that time and if it wasn't for her the high class people would have never known the state of their country was actually in or even care. As I've done research on her work she has a certain way of catching an emotion in a person and then when others see that they immediately recognize the emotion and I think this is one of many great examples of catching an emotion and that's why she is so influential and why her photos made people realize what was happening. How not everyone is not living a costumed life and most are working in farms and live in poor conditions, how most have been forced to move because of the dust bowl and the market crashing. Who knows maybe the New deal would have never gone into an effect. Dorothea Lange made an impact of how people see the great depression. Emotional This photo shows the emotional connection to an art form. That he's so focused on making beautiful music in beautiful places. Even though he may be struggling all he wants to do in life is play. The way he's sitting is hunched over his guitar and his head completely focused on what chords he needs to play next and his fingernails are grown out so he can pluck the strings much easier. Hs devotion is very apparent and he's making the best of what he has. Which reflects on most of the street performers and why they perform on the street, there making something out of what they have and they are practicing their craft and showing it to whoever will stop and listen. They are part of the atmosphere at Boba Park. They add beautiful sound to an already beautiful place and also add another thing to look at. Balboa park is a place where so many diffrent things come together science, art, music, dance, weddings, athletes, culture, photoghers, Jr theater, haunted trails and so much more. Socail Street performers are some of the most underappreciated people sometimes. They do a job where they don't have a constant flow of pay so it's a hit or miss everyday. Also it takes years to build up a reputation and to have people notice you. Even then some go unseen and they never become super famous or have a big audience. They also have to deal with people on the daily and you never really know who you are going to encounter on the street. Yeah sure you may run into the same people over and over again and maybe you're playing on the nice part of town, but sadly there are all different types of people in the world so you are bound to run into some rude people or even violent people. Other street performers even though they seem like they're in there own world they actually keep each other in check because if one guy does something on the same street then everyone loses business. Because if one person is being nonsense that reflects poorly on everyone else given the social stigma that they are all creeps or rude. Histrical Street performances also known as busking dates all the way back to the 18th century but didn't start picking up massive speed till the 60s. Every culture has there own type of street performing. Mexico has mariachi bands where they play around the most popular streets. Japan has Chindon'ya which is japanese for marching band they dress up and march down streets mostly to advertise for diffrent things. Before musicians and other stuff like that there were these doctors who would go around and cure people then sell their medicines. Street performers are not just limited to music. It can be circus tricks, live art, poetry, comedy and dancing. Some of the most well known names were street performers like Robin Williams, B.B King, Jewel, Brine Mac even benjamin franklin was a street performer. San diego is very well known for being a city with lots of street performers but seattle and san francisco are both places where there are street performers everywhere and hare big names come from. London is also very popular. Personal I have lived in san diego for almost 11 years now and I have gone to Balboa Park a lot. I have seen the same street performers over and over. I have theses performers engraved in my mind. I remember even giving them high fives as a kid or just standing there with my family on the weekends and feeling the sunburn on my face appearing. But i don't remember just street primers, I remember going to taking theater classes at Junior theater walking around the rose garden and making up different stories using our surroundings and our bodies during 8th grade. Going to haunted trails for the first time with people i had only known for a month during freshman year. Going to the dog park or running around the park with a dog I was babysitting the summer of 2016. I remember going to the titanic exhibition when it was the 100 year anniversary of the sinking and looking at all the relics found and touching a giant ice block. Going to a quinceanera photo shoot and carrying my friends big fluffy pink dress in 2 inch boots. I have a lot of good memories there. I can remember them so vividly because that place hasn't changed since I was 5 except for the fence around the big old tree and the japanese garden. But for the most part nothing has changed and I am hoping that I will be able to make more really nice memories because I feel that everyone needs that one place where they have good vibes from. Compitional That day was kinda gloomy so I didn't have a lot of light to work with but I tried to fix that when I put it into photoshop and then made it black and white. By giving a softer touch to his skin and making his cloths darker. I also cropped it so he is matching up with ther 2 points to the left in the rule of thirds. There is also a straight line into the back with grass and the sidewalk. Also the trees the in the back give another example of using straight lines and texture. Also another example of a straight line is the wall he's sitting on which is made out of symmetrical columns gives another example of lines. This photo has a lot of hidden lines like his guitar is a line that kinda pops out at you. Theres also alot of curves like on his chair and even in the columns. Cannery RowSo far in Cannery Row we have gotten a very real and intense view on the grate depression. How everyone is just trying to go on with life as normal as they can. Lee Chung really stands our to me because he just has let go of so much and is pretty chill about what happens, even when people haven't paid him back he lets it go becusase he knows that everyone is in a tough spot. But he is also not above being tough with his costumers. Because even though he is peaceful he sill has top make a living, and thats most peoples thoughts he's just more blunt about it

This week we did our first darkroom session while completely the first step in making our papers. We also did our final draft of our 1,000 word write up about one of Dorothea Lange's photo and some of us have even started the photoshopping portion of the assignment. And we played around with photoshopping the portraits we've been taking into black and white. We also talked about how to capture human struggle and we all now have to go out and capture a human subject struggling. 1,000 Word AssignmentEmotion This photo is literally shedding light on the sadness that is happening at the time. How people are just sad that they have to leave their homes and work in the fields for little money. But kids at the time also felt probably felt very lonely, with their parents working on the farm and them having to stay home or even them working on the farms which can also be lonely. Moving around when the season changes and maybe in her old life she had friends and now she can never see them again. Light The light in this photo I feel is portrayed in a very literal way because it’s showing that she is shedding light on the subject most are naive to. It’s also a great example of harsh lighting. On top of that the way the harsh light hits at a strong angle instead of straight up and down makes this photo that more striking. Also the fact that she is on the darker side of the lighting makes it that much more dramatic and makes the emotion sadness that much more apparent. Bosque Farms was in the valencia country and was far enough away from things that they were not effected till 1937 when the dust finally caught up to them. The homes that were built for them are still used to this day by some farmers but for the most part they are either empty or destroyed. Subject The subject in the photo conveys so much sadness and loneliness. Because as a kid she probably doesn't really know what is happening and why she had to leave her home. She just seems really confused on what is happening in her life. And the photo doesn't convey that she has any siblings so maybe when her parents are working on the frame maybe she is left home alone with nothing to do. Or maybe she does have siblings but she's the oldest and is left to take care of them when her parents are gone or shes the youngest and is left in the dark about stuff. She may go work in the farm herself with the rest of her family. But even then all of those thing still make her feel lonely and confused maybe even thinking no one cares for her because she is living poorly and that people rich people don't care about the poor. There she is giving off the vibe in this photo of what most back then were thinking about. How no one cares for the poor. Socail As we have discussed in class Dorothea Lange was one of the most influential photographers during that time and if it wasn't for her the high class people would have never known the state of their country was actually in. As I've done research on her work she has a certain way of catching an emotion in a person and then when others see that they immediately recognize the emotion and I think this is one of many great examples of catching an emotion and that's why she is so influential and why her photos made people realize what was happening. Human Struggle PlanMy plan is to capture photos of street performers at Balboa park with my dad's camera which is a nice camera and I am hoping to capture the struggle of an artist and also all the different talents they showcase. ChemistryI first turned it clack and white then I messed with the brightness a little so her hair would stick out and not blend in with the background. The original photo has been lost.
This week we learned about how to make a dark room and how to process photos with emulsion and how to use apparatuses. Then we actually made a dark room! With died lights hanging from the celling, tables moved to make it safer to move around when the lights are off, boxes so the prints wont be exposed to light ruining the photo, learning about diffrent chemicals were gonna be using to make the prints, making a system so we can open the door when we are doing prints. Also I was only there for Monday and Tuesday before I got sick and was out for 3 days. Then we started reading mice and men but since i've already read that book I am reading cannon row by the same author. We also had to do 5 writing pieces talking about different aspects like light, composition, historical, emotional, social, genders, personal, political etc of a photo taken by Dorothea Lange a photographer who changed the way people who were higher up saw the way the poor lived. The Main character kinda seems like he's tired and doesn't care for much. Like instead of heckling his tenants for the rent money he recognizes that they buy food from is store with the little bit of money they have. He just seems to have let go a lot in his life and is just now going with the flow. I am interested in getting to know his pass. ChemistryMy role in making the dark room was paper person which means I taped up some boxes so the light wouldn't be exposed to light. Apparatuses help us with emulsions because we have melt the jello emulsion with out it getting wet in the water, they also hold a trematode because we have to make sure the water doesn't boil.
This week we experimented with lights and taking photos of a human subject and also processing it in black and white. We also read an article written by Steinbeck about the great depression that was happening at the time. We discussed it and also had to answer the prompt "Dose our society depend on maintaining and creating of a peon class". We also watched a documentary about the dust bowl and wrote about that. We also had to do research on tow chemistry equations. Portraits/ Lighting Photos I tookPhotos I modeled forSteinbeck"Does our society really depend on creating and maintaining and creating Peon class?"This prompt has me all kinds of twisted up. I don't believe we should have a peon class, that they should have equal rights and have a chance to live better lives. But at the same time they are the reason CA is the 8th biggest economy. I f it wasn't for them we may not have anything right now. So this question has me in a tough spot. I feel like someone took a knife and has cut my thoughts in half. I would love to say that I would love to say that I would go out and work in the farms but due to medical conditions and I feel like I could help in other ways that will have a lasting impact. For example get them medical benefits or benefits to help out with their families. I can somewhat relate to what they're going through, when I was born my had me we there were around 21 or 22. They were still in college and we lived in small housing on an air force base. Than two years later my sister was born in new york after my dad left the airforce and was attending cornell and my family lived in a small apartment. But long story short we had to work very hard on little money to get where we are today. So I can sympathize with these workers and I understand what it's like to move around and try to just work with what you got and with options you have put out on the table. So do I think society needs to depend on the peon class? I really don't know honestly because I don't want them to continue having to work but at the same time they put food on our table and make the economy good. My thoughts our essentially I think it's awful that this is happening but I don't know what outcome would happen if we didn't have them. Chemistry EquationsAgNO3 + NaClThis is called the Molor Equation because it is dealing molecules. They helps identify different chemicals in that equation, It teaches us identify different chemicals but cannot be measured in a microscopic level. Source: https://faculty.ncc.edu/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=fJrMtI5BEyM%3D&tabid=1831 AB+ CDThis equation is called salt metathesis reaction and you excuse bonds between chemical spices and the product is a simler chemical bond. It teaches us about how to combined bonds.
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_metathesis_reaction In our first week of being on the Lerario/Strong team we learned more about the project called Light where we take photos of different stuff or things our teachers want us to experiment with. We also learned about the basics of cameras like shutter speed and the rule of thirds. We even got to go out and take pictures during Monday morning. We talked about safety parodical in chemistry and make a sign to remind kids of the safety rules. We also talked about a photo taken during the little rock integration. in conclusion it was a fun week and cant wait to do more with the team! Photos from the week 1/18/2017 - 1/22/2016Safety posterDraft #1Draft #2Little Rock IntegrationThis photo historically speaking is significant and iconic . Not just because it was the first few black kids to integrate into an all white school that was part of it, but more than that it captures every perspective that was happening at the time in one shot. You have the lady screaming at Elizabeth. You can see some grils on the side who appears they are just trying to get to school. You got Elizabeth who is being harassed but keeps her cool. But the craziest thing about this photo to me is there army guy in the back just doing his job, which is to protect the new kids. Weather they agree top third or not they really don't have a say right now because there job is not to have an opinion it is to follow there orders. So we have no idea really what they are think unlike everyone else who have obvious reactions to the whole thing. So as a viewer I am left to guess.
